The recession that’s dogged the U.S. economy for more than three years has forced some good people to make bad decisions.

Keeping large corporations, as well as homeowners, safe and secure during one of the more nerve-wracking financial periods in U.S. history has provided a new career for Paul Smith Jr., the Cincinnati native behind one of the fastest-growing national players in the security, investigative and personal/professional protection industry.

At PLS Protective Services (www.PLSProtection.com), the former 10-year police officer has transformed a small residential security service he used to run as a part-time gig, while punching the clock as a Traffic Safety Officer in Arlington Heights, into a diversified, comprehensive solution. His company has contracts across the U.S. and Canada, and will soon open its first regional office in Dayton, Ohio.

Cincinnati native Paul Smith Jr. will be on “The Fifth Third BusinessBeat” tonight on WCET-TV Channel 48 at 7:30 p.m.

Paul Smith Jr., Founder and CEO, PLS Protective Services.

“We offer innovative security and investigation solutions, while developing long-term relationships with our clients,” said Smith.

Honesty, integrity and respect are the hallmarks of PLS. It’s our professionalism, and attention to detail, that really sets us apart from other agencies.”

Most of the PLS staff is certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA). All have real-life, in-depth experience providing an array of security options. The company now provides security for shopping and medical centers, apartment complexes and HUD properties, air parks and community airports, construction sites, warehouses and educational campuses.

PLS: STILL HIRING GROWING, LOOKING FOR BIGGER OFFICE

PLS Protective Services has grown from five employees to 50 in two years; annual growth in contracts signed has increased at least 20 percent for the last several years.

Now renting a small office on Galbraith Road in Colerain Township, PLS is looking to at least triple its cramped, 500-square-foot headquarters into an office of at least 2,000 square feet. He’s currently interviewing commercial real estate representatives to secure the new office.

Smith was a police officer working street patrols for several different police departments over a 10-year period. He got his start in the business in 2004, running security details for apartment complex owners.

The company grew into investigations shortly thereafter, after connecting with multiple local attorneys and law firms and working out partnerships; in 2007, PLS grew significantly when it added armed and unarmed security divisions.

The security work can be split into four segments: Residential Protection, Construction Site Protection, Retail Protection and Corporate Office Protection.

Services provided fall into five categories:

  1. Physical and Electronic Surveillance;
  2. Asset Protection and GPS Tracking;
  3. Background Investigations;
  4. Identity Theft Investigations;
  5. Computer Forensics.

New services that PLS is promoting include Instant Online Reporting and Neighborhood Watch programs that rely on web-based notification and security techniques.

Our mission is to provide high-quality security with integrity, professionalism and respect for our clients and the communities where we do business. Pretty simple stuff,” said Smith, a straight-talker who believes in six core values: Excellence, Service, Encouragement, Strength, Diversity and Community.

“We strive for a collegial group practice, while recognizing that our principal goal is to serve clients effectively,” he said.
