[CINCINNATI, Ohio ~ Dec. 13, 2013] Isabelle Stamler, Cincinnati author and a retired schoolteacher from Wyoming and Saylor Park, needn’t look far for inspiration: the New York native essentially lived the novel she wrote, recently published in hardcover as Sarah’s Ten Fingers (ISBN: 9781475936810, iUniverse, $39.95, January 2013). Trade paper and eBook formats are also available online, and in bookstores nationwide.

The people are real, as are their stories. This is my family, my blood, as attached to me today as my grandmother’s 10 fingers were part of her,” said Stamler, a New York native and descendant of Eastern European immigrants.

Additional information about Isabelle and the book can be found on her website, www.IsabelleStamler.com.

Stamler moved to Cincinnati in the 1950s with her husband, who had landed a job at Rollmans Department Store, after a raucous upbringing in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Coney Island during pre- and post-World War II.

She is currently scheduling book signing appointments and various promotional events to promote the book.

The Family, The Cincinnati Connection: A Memoir

 The character of Sarah, an illiterate Soviet Union woman with the dream of moving to America with her six children, is painted with a lush, historical, generation-spanning brush.

Author Stamler boils life down, on life’s terms, with an engaging, memoir-based path from Russia to New York City and Cincinnati. A few highlights:

– Disinfecting the Saylor Park CPS pool after its use by African-Americans (weekly);

–  Skinning bombed-out horses on World War I battlefields for their hides (and the smell);

– Paying bribes to Eastern European immigration officials to board the boat to America;

– Pondering a Luftwaffe wave while a student at P.S. 61, in the days after Pearl Harbor;

– Calling for an Jewish homeland at a 1943 Madison Square Garden rally;

– Chowing down on Nathan’s Famous, then an Ingrid Bergman flick at the RKO Theater;

– Surviving as the “only living Jews on Cincinnati’s West Side.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In this artfully crafted memoir, author Isabelle Stamler, a New York native who relocated to the Midwest (Cincinnati), traces her family’s roots to the small Belarusian hamlet of Vashisht, narrating their story of their journey from Russian to a new life in New York City.

Stamler, 80, now lives in Cincinnati, where she enjoys her retirement and is working on her second book.

ABOUT THE BOOK

In the early 1900s, Sarah, a single mother of six children, is trapped in the bloody upheaval marking the death of Czarist Russia, and the birth of the Soviet Union. Facing bigotry, extreme poverty, and blood revolution, Sarah determines to escape the catastrophe engulfing her and her family. And she vows to bring them all to America.

From the Great Depression through World War II and beyond, “Sarah’s Ten Fingers” tells a story of family trials and tribulations and ultimate survival, undaunted as a determined mother seeking a better life for her and her family.
