Thomas J. Craig of Cincinnati, resident of Episcopal Retirement Services (ERS) at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community, “adjusted” his birth certificate – with full knowledge of his parents – to enlist in the U.S. navy at the age of 16, one year before federal law permitted voluntarily joining the U.S. Armed Forces (17). “A lot of volunteers did that, and we were forgiven by the Navy after the war,” says Mr. Craig. Born and raised in NYC, Craig was sent to Boot Camp in Providence, R.I. From there, he was sent to technical training and Air Gunners School in jacksonville, Fla., after which he was sent to the naval air station in Fort Lauderdale. Craig was a radio operator and tail gunner, a U.S. Navy Airman, who became part of Torpedo Squadron 44, flying a Grumman Avenger Torpedo Bomber. Craig was based on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Langley near fleet anchorage at Ulithi in the Caroline Islands. He flew 35 missions off the carrier in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and participated in the Battle of Okinawa. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals. Mr. Craig worked for 28 years in Cincinnati television at WLWT-TV, the local NBC affiliate in The Queen City.
